"What sport do you like?" "I read.”

A couple of weeks ago, an English gentleman in his eighties visited our Sheung Wan office. Following a recommendation from a friend from RTHK, he hoped Read-Cycling could give his late wife’s cherished Chinese book collection a meaningful second life.

As we packed up their study, he fondly recalled their life together. When they first started dating and he asked what sport she played, her answer was simple: “I read.”

He pointed to her bookshelves and smiled, calling them her "hard drive"—the go-to reference she would consult with a laugh to correct mispronunciations and use of idioms by radio hosts.

This rich collection of Chinese literature and history will soon join our 20,000 pre-loved books, arriving in batches at our community bookstore (PPO Library) and online at Book Shopping.

★ Beyond Donating Books: What Matters Just as Much ★

Books we receive must continuously circulate back into the community so our warehouse retains enough space to run community donation services, such as our “Free Books Programmes" for schools and social welfare centres.

Here is how you can help us keep books flowing:

  1. Individuals — Come treasure-hunt and buy books at PPO Library or online at Book Shopping (details below).

  2. Schools & Non-Profits — Make good use of our Free Books Programmes to replenish books in public spaces, including campuses, community centres, and community living rooms.

  3. Corporates — Sponsor our Free Books Programmes to help more underserved groups enjoy the joy of reading.
