Anna Sherman was born in Little Rock Arkansas. She studied Greek and Latin at Wellesley College and at Lincoln College, Oxford. She has an MSc in Russian and Post-Soviet Studies from the London School of Economics. She worked for Financial Times Energy until 2001, when she moved to Tokyo.
